Shopping for your wedding gown or suit is often built up to be this magical, tear-filled moment where you instantly know you've found "the one." While it is an incredibly special experience, the reality of wedding fashion can also be physically exhausting, expensive, and filled with opinions you didn't ask for.

1. Let Your Venue & Season Guide You
Before you even step foot in a boutique, think about where and when you are getting married. You can absolutely wear whatever makes you feel most beautiful, but keeping the overall vibe and season in mind will help you narrow down the endless ocean of options! A heavy, long-sleeve satin ballgown might be your dream dress, but if you are getting married outside in late July, you are going to be miserable. Let your setting help you filter your choices.
2. Set the "Entourage" Boundary
Television shows have convinced us that we need to bring our mom, mother-in-law, three sisters, and five bridesmaids to every dress appointment. Please don't do this! Bringing a massive entourage means managing a dozen different opinions, which will almost always drown out your own voice. Keep your shopping crew to 2 or 3 highly supportive people, or your closest trusted family and friends who will bring the right vibe. You only want people in that room who will advocate for you and keep the energy positive.
3. The Shopping Day Game Plan
When it comes to the actual day of shopping, pacing is everything. Pick a dedicated day and book appointments at just two boutiques. You can always book a third just in case, but honestly, you will likely find "the one" by the first or second place! Give yourself plenty of travel time between shops so you aren't rushing, and schedule a fun lunch for afterward to celebrate.
4. The Timeline Reality
The traditional wedding industry will tell you that you need to order a gown a full year in advance. While starting 9 to 12 months out is great for avoiding rush fees, do not let the internet rush or panic you! If you have a tighter timeline, it will work out either way. You can absolutely get a dress turned around faster. The secret? Just let the bridal salon know your timeline when you book the appointment. They will intentionally only show you dresses that can be ordered quickly or bought off the rack, saving you from falling in love with something that won't arrive in time.
5. Don't Forget the Guys!
Grooms and groomsmen need a timeline, too! If your partner is ordering a custom suit or tuxedo, they need to start that process about 3 to 4 months in advance to allow time for the fabric to be ordered and tailored. If they are renting, get the group measured at least 2 months out.
6. The 10-Hour Comfort Test
It is easy to fall in love with a garment when you are standing perfectly still on a pedestal in a bridal shop. But on your wedding day, you will be wearing this outfit for 10 to 12 hours. You will be hugging, eating, drinking, sitting, and dancing.
7. The Bustle and The Bathroom Plan
If your outfit has a train, it will need to be "bustled" (pinned or buttoned up) before the reception so you can actually dance. Do not leave this to chance!

A quick note on bridal sizing: it is notoriously weird. Wedding dress sizes are often 2 to 3 sizes larger than your standard street clothes. Please, take a deep breath and ignore the number on the tag. Your worth is not tied to a dress size. The garment's only job is to be altered to fit your beautiful body exactly as it is today. You do not need to change yourself to fit the outfit.
